What Does God Hate?

Proverbs 16:5 tells us that The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.  Are you a prideful person?  I remember being in a Sunday school class and my Sunday school teacher asked us if we believed we were prideful.  I thought to myself, “no, I am not prideful at all”.  The teacher went on to say that the person who believes they have no pride, in fact has the most pride…so much pride that they can’t even admit they have it.  OUCH!  The Bible speaks about pride and how God detests it.  Pride has no place in His kingdom.  Proverbs 8:13 says, “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech”.  We must be on guard against pride!  The world we live in tells us to climb the ladder no matter who you step on, it tells us that we can be anything we want to be and it tells us we have power through our own selves.  None of these things are right in the eyes of God.  These things are centered about “self” and they go against what the Bible teaches.  Pride is deceptive.  Remember, Satan was one of God’s angels who was cast out of heaven because of his desire to be equal with God, to fuel his pride.  So how do we know if we have pride?  Well, pride will show up in our behaviors.  When we desire to be the center of attention, or we are unable to take criticism well, then we may be full of pride.  If we have a tough time delivering an apology, or have a desire for others to fail, we should be alarmed—these behaviors demonstrate pride.  I love what C.S. Lewis says about pride in his book, Mere Christianity.  He says, ““As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.”  Be on guard against the pit of pride.  Let’s keep our eyes focused upward to our God and ask Him to rid us of any pride that may be hidden away in our hearts.   Thanks for reading today!  ~Joy

Great reminder and I love the quote from C.S. Lewis. I could benefit by rereading this post at least once a week if not everyday!
